NEW YORK One was an Irish priest who walked New York's streets in sandals and a plain
brown robe. Another was a Puerto Rican socialite with a penthouse in Miami
and a closet of designer clothes. There was the pilot whose heart lay in
his 130-acre farm in rural Massachusetts. There was a television producer
and an advertising saleswoman and a college professor.
All the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks won't be named or even
numbered for days if not weeks, but those already known reveal a
cross-section of Americans.
Father Mychal Judge, a Franciscan Friar and one of the chaplains of the New
York City Fire Department, died at the World Trade Center where he had
rushed to help the wounded.
The priest lived in a friary near Manhattan's Penn Station, but he spent
much of his time in the city's hospitals and fire houses. He was never one
to shy away from tragedy in the city. When firefighters fell in the line of
duty, Judge counseled their families and spoke at their funerals. He formed
a close friendship with Steven MacDonald, a city police officer paralyzed by
a teenage gunman in 1986. When TWA Flight 800 crashed off Long Island, Judge
was there to comfort devastated relatives and shellshocked rescuers.
"He was the nicest guy you'd ever meet," said a stunned Fire Commissioner
Thomas Van Essen.
Last year, on the fourth anniversary of the TWA crash, Judge offered words
of solace to the victims' families, still struggling with grief.
"Have your memories and hold tight to your tears," he said. "Open your
hearts, and let their spirit and life keep you going."
Sonia Morales Puopolo, a Democratic fundraiser and socialite, was aboard
American Airlines Flight 11, a Boston-to-Los Angeles flight that crashed
into the World Trade Center.
Her husband, Dominic, told the Miami Herald that his 58-year-old wife, a
Puerto Rican native and one-time ballerina, was en route to the Latin Grammy
Awards. The couple and their daughter, Tita, were staples of Miami's social
scene.
In February 2000, she opened her penthouse to 75 guests for a
$7,500-a-person champagne and dessert fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's
Senate campaign. The same month, she and her husband attended a White House
state dinner for the King of Spain.
``I feel that I've lost my soulmate,'' Dominic Puopolo told the Herald.
``Sonia and I have been married for 38 years. We loved each other very, very
much. She was an inspiration to very many women in Miami. She
was a giver, not a taker. She gave and gave and gave.''
The pilot of American Airlines Flight 11 was John Ogonowski, who lived with
his wife and three daughters in Dracut, Mass.
Ogonowski was a former Air Force pilot who loved to fly, but he also loved
the earth, specifically the rich ground of his 130-acre farm. The
fourth-generation farmer was an officer in the local land trust and was
frequently sought out for advice on growing crops.
"Take a good look at that, the beauty of the land around here," his brother
Jim said Tuesday, standing in front of a field of waving hay. "That's John's
legacy."
Among the others that perished:
Barbara Olson, a lawyer and television commentator who appeared frequently
on Larry King Live, was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77 to Los
Angeles from Washington. Olson, 45, was the wife of Solicitor General Ted
Olson and telephoned him twice during the flight, telling him that
hijackers armed with box cutters and knives had commandeered the flight.
David Angell, 58, the executive producer of NBC's Frasier and a
co-creator of the sitcoms Cheers and Wings, was aboard Flight 11 with his
wife, Lynn. The couple was reportedly returning to Pasadena from their
Massachusetts summer home where they had attended a wedding.
