With the use of message boards, Internet users have found a new outlet for voicing their opinions and concerns about the terrorism attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and America as a whole. With hundreds of posts ranging from emotional reactions to possible retaliation tactics, each response tells a unique story.
Chilling posts like one from a Court TV message board user this week goes on to explain how, "A convoy of U.S. military vehicles went rolling by. They had tanks, earth-digging equipment, covered trucks, and a military expert leading a convoy of about 12 to 16 vehicles that were going towards the West Side Highway towards the financial district in lower Manhattan."
Most of the reactions are from people who live in New York City. They offer detailed accounts of how they were frightened and concerned, but that they have done everything in their power to help others. An emotional reaction from one user says, "I had a woman from my building sitting in my dining room. She was numb, crying, the tears, no one to turn to. She lives alone and I just happened to be walking into the building. I am so glad I helped her, but it drained me, especially after coming home from Manhattan. Thanks [to other people on the message board] for being here."
Court TV message board users have also written messages concerning who may be responsible for the attacks. They have expressed concerns for the protection of American citizens of Arab decent who may possibly be targets for hostile emotional, verbal and physical attacks simply because of their religion or country of origin.
One message subject is entitled, "Let us respect Arab-Americans and recognize their contributions to our free [American] free society. My husband is Turkish. Together, we have watched the events unfold. Together, we donated blood, money, and prayers to the relief effort. Our American anger towards foreigners is a natural and immediate reaction. But please do not forget that there are immigrants in our country who are decent citizens, committed to upholding the constitution and defending our freedom."
Among other posts, Court TV users must take into account that the material posted on the message board is based on opinion and may not be completely factual. Several posts include insights into what the United States government should do to ward off future terrorist attacks.
"I have total faith in our government," one user writes. "We will take the time to put all of the pieces together and get all of the parties involved. This is not something to rush into. It takes time for careful and thoughtful planning."
One posting even reminds people to unite, to be respectful and to be considerate of the different views presented on the message board.
"For the posters I usually consider to be intelligent and thoughtful, I’m finding it hard to digest the hateful things that some of you are spewing at each other," another user writes. "This is a time when we should all be pulling together to try to find a solution. It is fun when we argue about the trials on Court TV, but it is unfortunate that we can’t get along on these boards when it is high time we stood together for the good of this country."
