World Trade Center attack, photo of two suspects on airline surveillance tape

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A photograph taken from a surveillance tape shows two suspected terrorists heading toward their gate at the Portland airport the same day of the terrorist attacks.

The image, released by authorities Wednesday, shows the pair before they boarded a commuter flight from Portland International Jetport to Boston the morning of Sept. 11.

One of the men, believed to be Mohamed Atta, has a bag over his shoulder. The other, said to be Abdulaziz Alomari, is seen reaching down as if to take something from the conveyor belt at a security checkpoint.

Investigators say that once in Boston, the men switched to American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked and crashed into one of the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York.

The two men are believed to have spent the night in Portland, but Police Chief Michael Chitwood said based on what authorities know, the men "have no long-term connection nor have they been in Maine prior to this."
