The JonBenet Ramsey Case

Court TV's Catherine Crier on the dropped charges against John Mark Karr

August 29, 2006

Court TV Host: Court TV's Catherine Crier is here with us now. Welcome, thanks for being our guest online today.

Catherine Crier: Hey, everybody!

Question from ctv_warhorse2: Do you think Mary Lacy acted in an appropriate manner with the arrest of Karr or do you think she did not perform her job duties properly? Shouldn't a D.A.'s office gather evidence before an arrest rather than make an arrest then try to build a case? Having visions of Aruba here.

Catherine Crier: There are times when exigent circumstances might make an early arrest appropriate. This was not one of them. I do not think she pursued sufficient leads, nor acquired enough information to make this arrest.

Question from unsure: Do you think Karr is still under investigation?

Catherine Crier: I do not believe Karr is still under investigation for THIS crime. Who knows how many unsolved murders may be examined in the wake of his outrageous claims.

Question from naz: I refuse to believe the Ramseys had any thing to do with JonBenet's death. How do you feel?

Catherine Crier: I must say that one comment by D.A. Lacy was on target and that is: no one is off the table yet.

Question from daleeff: Catherine, don't you think it was a good thing to get a scum like Karr off the street before he harmed a lil girl, assuming he hadn't already?

Catherine Crier: The rule of law does not allow us to arrest people just because we think they might commit a crime. I agree he seems quite the "scum," but can you imagine a country where we arrest first and wonder if he might commit a crime after the fact.

Question from SLOTOWN: Catherine, do you feel you were overly harsh yesterday on Mary Lacy?

Catherine Crier: I have repeatedly said it is easy to armchair quarterback, but given that predicate, I have to call it like I see it. I also include the judge who signed the warrant in my criticism because I don't believe there was probable cause for the arrest.

Question from cosette: I was wondering if Karr should be able to do community service like the "runaway bride" did?

Catherine Crier: Community service is sometimes a possibility as a punishment in a misdemeanor case. The likelihood here, however, is slim and none.

Question from Paisley: What if the DNA was a match, would you still stay this arrest was not appropriate in the way it was executed?

Catherine Crier: Yes. The underlying arrest was not appropriate. However, that would not likely taint a further prosecution. I repeatedly said on air that I hoped they had the right guy - Karr is a creep, and I don't mind him being off our streets. My belief in the rule of law is stronger than my disgust at any particular criminal.

Question from Dreem: Was he that convincing?

Catherine Crier: When I saw the tape of the "perp walk" and "press conference" in Thailand, all I could think was nutjob. Certainly there were intriguing e-mails and audio tapes but they provided no nexus between Karr and the actual crime. Any preliminary investigation of his whereabouts would have lead to the family's alibi, just as an examination of DNA picked up in Thailand would have eliminated him as a suspect.

Question from Lorraine: Wasn't she 'damned if she did/damned if she didn't' make a move on Karr? Since the media was all over it, she pretty much HAD to bring him back to show they weren't ignoring his claims.

Catherine Crier: That statement has been offered as an excuse for the rush to Thailand, but the media was not on to this suspect until we were notified he was about to be arrested. No one that I'm aware of knew they were looking at this guy, so just who was going to blow the investigation?

Question from Smudge: Do you think it's possible that Karr has had some contact with the real killer via the underground world of some pedophiles?

Catherine Crier: Anything's possible. Do I think it's probable? No.

Question from Lorraine: Who notified the media? The Thai police?

Catherine Crier: Our notification, I believe, came through Boulder authorities.

Question from Marino: How many times has a prosecutor gone after a suspect, arrested them and latter dropped the charges. It seems harsh to say Lacy did wrong, when she was just following a lead.

Catherine Crier: Investigating this man was not wrong. It was commendable. Sending authorities to arrest him in a foreign country with no substantive link to the case was wrong.

Question from ally: Catherine Crier, hello. Karr is a scary fellow to me to be let loose. What can a judge sentence him on for the child porn charges?

Catherine Crier: He is looking at a maximum of one year per charge. Normally, he would receive one year total, but in California they can run misdemeanor sentences consecutively, which could give him a maximum of six years, plus six months time for jumping bail.

Question from Elizabeth: Do you think he will get any psychiatric help?

Catherine Crier: That would be my first requirement at sentencing. But you have to cooperate to make such help meaningful. I'm not optimistic that any that any real change would be possible.

Question from Missed_Q_WWH: Catherine, why do you think that the DA's office is so focused on so many of these internet "sleuths" for this investigation?

Catherine Crier: The internet "sleuths" were the source of all the links between Karr and the Ramsey case. There was no other information linking him to this murder.

Question from Paisley: Who called the press conference in Thailand?

Catherine Crier: I think the press was alerted to Karr's movements and Karr requested permission to speak to the press.

Question from UP: Catherine, why do you think Boulder authorities keep refusing to look at Hogarth, or whatever the guy's name was, and his possible accomplice?

Catherine Crier: Hogarth was investigated by authorities. The man committed suicide and was found with a stun gun. I believe he owned a pair of high tech boots similar to the imprint left in the basement. His DNA was tested; it was not a match. There has been talk of a possible accomplice in relation to this man. I am unaware that that line of inquiry went anywhere.

Question from greenacres: Why has the Ramsey case received so much attention over the years? Why is it important?

Catherine Crier: I guess I should say that all unsolved murder cases are important. I do believe that. But the lurid fascination of this case puts it in a special category.

Question from kath: Do you believe this case will ever be solved?

Catherine Crier: As I suggested tonight, my only hope at this point lies in a deathbed confession. A last hope in what may remain an unsolved mystery. Thanks everyone, hope you'll join me tomorrow.
