A bag of trouble
The woman possessed stolen property, which she acquired through petty larceny, or so stated the prosecution.

While her charges were read and the case against her stated, the currently homeless woman remained fully focused on affixing a shirt around her waist. Tying and retying while her lawyers and the court determined her future.

The present lacked a certain something, so why should she be concerned with the future? She had full-blown AIDS and no place to live and now an arrest. But still, primarily concerned with a comfortable fit of the shirt around her waist.

And even her friendships fail her. She had spent the previous afternoon "shopping" with a friend. The friend chose his items carefully, but failed to complete any transaction, instead bypassing the register on the way out of the store.

When security approached the pair outside, the friend passed off the goodies and bolted. In the words of her lawyer, "This so-called friend left her literally holding the bag."

The judge called for $500 bail. The woman reacted by displaying zero reaction.
