The Florida defense
The police sometimes study others' anatomies and physiques like a doctor. Bleeding and bruises naturally garner attention. But they also watch for the more subtle calling cards of trouble, and in this case a soon-to-be defendant's body bulged unnaturally.
The cops stopped the man and the quizzing began. Before long, they determined the bulge's cause: a loaded handgun.
While delineating the charges for the judge, the prosecutor points out that this individual has an extensive out-of-state record. The public defender initially denies it, but then comes around although not fully.
"Your honor, my client was living in Florida," the attorney says, as if that explains it away.
Realizing this fact alone was not convincing the judge, he presses on: "They prosecute absolutely everything down there."
The judge flips through the folder and begins to read aloud, "Cocaine possession ... possession of a weapon ... cocaine possession ...
cocaine distribution ... possession of a knife."
She pauses and shakes her head.
"Oh yeah, they will prosecute anything down there!" the judge says.
For the loaded gun and the chutzpah $100,000 bail.
