Virginia and the Death Penalty

Virginia allows the death penalty as an option in the following cases:

murder during the commission or attempts to commit specified felonies (abduction, armed robbery, rape, sodomy)
contracted murder
murder by a prisoner while in custody
murder of a law enforcement officer
multiple murders
murder of a child under the age of 12 during an abduction
murder arising from drug violations

Virginia authorizes both lethal injection and electrocution. Lethal injection is used if the inmate fails to choose.

Minimum age for death penalty: 16

Executions 1930-1976: 114

Executions since 1977: 52
