Jewell Files Libel Suit Against Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Richard Jewell filed suit January 28, 1997 against the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after the paper reported in a July 30, 1996 article that Jewell was a prime suspect in the FBI investigation of the Olympic Centennial Park bombing. The suit also names Piedmont College as a defendant, claiming college officials approached the FBI and the media with "false and defamatory statements about Mr. Jewell, his personality and his work history at Piedmont College." Jewell was officially ruled out as a suspect in the FBI investigation last October.
