JonBenet jury awaits forensic evidence

BOULDER, Colo. (Court TV) — The grand jury in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case is waiting for results from forensic analysis, according to Adams County District Attorney Bob Grant.

Grant, who is advising Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter, said Wednesday that the jury had been waiting for the test results for the past two months.

The grand jury has not met since May 25. During that period, Boulder detectives have been conducting additional probes into JonBenet's killing, collecting DNA samples from some witnesses and interviewing others about Patsy Ramsey, JonBenet's mother.

Grant would not elaborate on what type of forensic work is expected. Inspector Pete Mang of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said forensic analysis "can mean anything. It's all-encompassing — anything from the analysis of physical evidence to psychiatric evaluations and criminal profiling," according to The Denver Post.

Forensics laboratory analysis can encompass everything from fingerprints and handwriting to firearms and hairs.

Grant has only said, "Some folks have speculated that all that is going on is DNA analysis, and that's just not the case."

Six-year-old JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her Boulder home in December of 1996. No arrests have been made, but Patsy and John Ramsey are considered suspects in the murder of their child.

The Ramseys, who moved to Atlanta with their son, Burke, in July 1997, have maintained their innocence.

The DA's office also reported Wednesday that new budget projections will allow the grand jury investigation to continue into mid-August, according to The Boulder News. Prosecutors were due to run out of money June 30, but the grand jury's apparent lack of activity has created a budget surplus.

Under current projections, the surplus will carry the jury through to Aug. 9, when prosecutors will decide whether further funding will be necessary. The grand jury has been investigating the Christmas 1996 slaying since Sept. 15 and is impaneled until Oct. 20.

The city and county of Boulder, along with the state of Colorado, have spent more than $1.8 million on the investigation.
