Judge to seat new grand jury with no JonBenet questions

DENVER (AP) — With the grand jury considering the JonBenet Ramsey slaying set to expire, the prosecutor said Tuesday he will seat a new jury without prequalifying its members to consider the case, which means it probably won't work on it.

The new panel will replace a jury that has been considering the Ramsey slaying and unrelated crimes for nearly 18 months. When that panel was seated, its members were questioned extensively about the 1996 slaying.

"Unlike the 1998-1999 grand jury, these jurors will not ... be qualified to investigate the homicide of JonBenet Ramsey," said Suzanne Laurion, spokeswoman for Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter.

Asked if the new grand jury could work on the JonBenet case, Ms. Laurion said, "The possibility is there, but it is remote."

She declined additional comment.

The current grand jury, which will mark the first anniversary of its investigation into the slaying on Wednesday, has not met since May 25. Its term will expire Oct. 20.

The new grand jury selection is slated to begin Sept. 29.

JonBenet, 6, was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home on Dec. 26, 1996.

John Ramsey found his daughter's body about eight hours after his wife, Patsy Ramsey, told police she had discovered a ransom note seeking money in exchange for JonBenet's safe return.

Police have said the Ramseys are under suspicion, while the couple has repeatedly proclaimed innocence.

Denver defense attorney Scott Robinson, who has followed the Ramsey case closely, said he believes Hunter's announcement makes it clear there will be no rush to an indictment.

"I've said all along nobody's going to be indicted in this," he said.
