Forensic expert says Ramsey grand jury decision may come today or tomorrow
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Forensic expert Henry Lee, an adviser in the JonBenet Ramsey case, said the grand jury investigating the girl's death likely will issue a decision today or Wednesday.
But Lee said in an interview today on ABC's ``Good Morning America'' that he couldn't predict whether jurors will hand up an indictment in the nearly 3-year-old case.
``This case has some inherent issues and problems,'' he said.
Lee, known for his work for the O.J. Simpson defense team, met with Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter in Denver over the weekend.
``It was a productive meeting. I really can't say any more,'' Lee said in an earlier interview.
Hunter asked Lee, Connecticut's public safety commissioner, to advise him on DNA evidence. Lee and Hunter have met several times to discuss the case.
The grand jury hearing the case is expected to meet today after having taken Monday off. The panel's term expires Oct. 20, by which time it must issue indictments, issue a report or disband without taking action.
``It's more likely today or tomorrow there's some decision,'' Lee said. Hunter last week also hinted that an announcement might be imminent.
The grand jury has been meeting since September 1998, but took about four months off before resuming work two weeks ago.
JonBenet's body was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her parents' home Dec. 26, 1996. Police have said her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, remain under an ``umbrella of suspicion.'' The Ramseys have steadfastly maintained their innocence.
Hunter turned to the grand jury after the case bogged down in wrangling over accusations the investigation was bungled by authorities, who allowed John Ramsey, a millionaire businessman, to search the house for evidence.
Ramsey, accompanied by a friend, found his daughter's body and contaminated evidence, authorities said.
The family left Boulder two years ago and moved to the Atlanta area with their 12-year-old son.
