Police: Woman confesses to killing husband 26 years ago

KILGORE, Texas (AP) — A woman who claimed drug dealers shot and killed her husband 26 years ago as he slept in his bed has confessed to the slaying, police said Wednesday.

The case went to the Texas Rangers Unsolved Crimes Investigation Team after the victim's brother pushed authorities to re-examine the case in 2003.

She faces a murder charge in the 1980 slaying of John Gough, 27 at the time.

She had been a suspect earlier when she claimed she killed her husband in self-defense, said Kilgore Police Chief Ronnie Moore. But prosecutors dropped the case, saying there was not enough evidence.

"I guess the timing was right when the Rangers finally interviewed her," Moore said. "She had had enough and was going to give up."

Authorities would not comment on a possible motive.

Wanda Gough, 52, who had moved to Garner, N.C., and was working as a cabinet installer, turned herself in to Gregg County sheriff's deputies Monday and posted $20,000 bail the same day, authorities said.

A phone number for Gough in Garner could not be found.
