WASHINGTON (AP) Private investigators working for Chandra Levy’s parents discovered a human bone and twisted wire near the site where her remains were found in a Washington park.
Police said cadaver dogs, crime scene technicians and police cadets had searched the area. The bone showed evidence that an animal could have carried it away from the rest of the remains, they said.
However, two private investigators found the items Wednesday afternoon in their examination of the remote area where much of Levy’s remains and clothing were found.
“It is unacceptable that these items were not located,” said Police Chief Charles Ramsey.
Billy Martin, lawyer for the Levy family, said it is “disturbing” that police didn’t find the bone and the wire during the search, which lasted a week.
Police said it wasn’t likely that the wire could have been used to harm the former intern, but “we’ll clearly look at that possibility,” said Cmdr. Christopher LoJacono of the Washington police forensics science division.
LoJacono said the wire appeared to be the same kind used by the National Park Service to secure trees in the heavily forested park.
Police said they would search the site again to see if they could find other overlooked evidence.
