Without execution, business as usual in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — With the execution of Timothy McVeigh delayed until at least next month, schools, courts and government offices in Terre Haute opened as usual Wednesday — the original execution date.

Concerns about security and congestion around the city of 60,000 had prompted local officials to announce plans to close nearly all public buildings on the day McVeigh was to have been executed at the nearby federal prison.

"We're open on just a little more heightened security," Police Chief James Horrall said Wednesday. "Other than that, it's just a normal day."

"Everything is quiet here," said Raoul David, owner of a grocery store across the street from the prison. Customers, he added, are "nervous, but they want to get it over with."

Vigo County School Superintendent Dan Tanoos said Monday that with the execution postponed, the 16,500-student district had no reason for its 30 schools to be closed.

No decision has been made on whether schools will be open on the new June 11 execution date — the day summer school is scheduled to start.

Three big events scheduled for Terre Haute next month, the Miss Indiana pageant (June 10-16), Hoosier Boys State (June 9-16) and Indiana State University's registration session for new students (June 11-29), will not be postponed, event organizers said.

"Planning for the (Boys State) program began in August and postponement would be difficult, considering the many schedules of counselors and delegates," said Denise Domogalik, Indiana American Legion Americanism programs coordinator. The Boys State program teaches youths about government.

City officials had complained about a lack on consultation over the June 11 execution date set last week by Attorney General John Ashcroft.

The delay is to give McVeigh's attorneys time to review more than 3,000 newly discovered FBI documents, which were turned over last week. McVeigh is weighing whether the documents provide an opportunity to raise legal challenges to his conviction and death sentence.
