Lost in Manhattan
Etan Patz, 6, was abducted on May 25, 1979, while walking alone in lower Manhattan. His disappearance brought nationwide awareness to the problem of missing children, prompting the practice of displaying lost kids' faces on milk cartons. In 2001, Etan's parents had a judge declare him legally dead so they could file a wrongful death suit against longtime suspect Jose Antonio Ramos. On May 5, 2004, a Manhattan judge declared Ramos responsible for the boy's death because he disobeyed her orders to answer deposition questions under oath for a lawyer representing the Patzes.
