Interview with Vinnie Politan <<1 2 3
Q: That was one of the questions. How much will music be a part of the new show, and will you be tempted to spin the tunes as you deliver the latest breaking news and biggest issues of the day?
A: Well, I think music will be a big part of the show when nature calls because I'll need to take a quick little break, if you know what I mean. But we’re going to use music to kind of set the tone, set the mood for whatever story or case that we're working on that day. We'll have The Smoking Gun guys come in. We'll be talking to all our correspondents, Beth Karas, Jean Casarez, Savannah Guthrie, depending on what the story is. We'll try to find the appropriate music to set the tone for the way we're going to cover it.

Q: Do your brother and father want to get on the radio?
A: Now, this is interesting. My father, I've been trying to get him to come on the television show. He won't come on. But I think I can coax him into coming on the radio show. My brother, I think he'll want to come on as well, and he's an expert in one area. My father's an expert in another area. So whenever it's appropriate, you may hear from all the Politan boys.

Q: So, what's the most exciting thing about the new challenge, live listeners, being able to let your hair down, flying solo?
A: The most exciting part is going to be the interaction with the listeners [and] viewers. I met these people, some of them, when I was out covering trials as a correspondent. You know, you'd have an opportunity to talk to them and it was really revealing as to what's on their mind. We get a little bit of that through the e-mail, but I think it's much easier for someone to just pick up a phone and call us, and you call us, we're going to put you on. So that's what I'm really looking forward to is doing that, and also the wide array of stories that we can do because it's a lot easier to track someone down on the phone than to get them to a studio and to bring them into New York. It would be easier to reach out and talk to a lot of different people involved in all the cases we're covering. That, and I don't have to wear a suit and tie. Did I mention that?

Q: What really drives you? Is it to entertain? Is it to inform?
A: You know, I've always loved doing this. My hobby before I got involved in broadcasting was making videotapes. When I was ten years-old, I had a little cassette recorder and I had “The Vinnie Show,” and I've been doing this all my life, but now I'm getting paid to do it, so that's great. I'm energized everyday to cover whatever that story is, and the thing that makes it great is everyday it's a different story, unless of course it’s the Scott Peterson case and it's the same story for five months. But there's a challenge each day that something is going to come up, something interesting, and we're going to approach it from maybe an angle that someone else hasn't thought of, and I think that's the challenge in doing what we do and making it interesting, and, you know, you get caught up in these stories. You get caught up in the cases and they energize you, and I think that's what makes you wake up every morning at 3 a.m. to come to work.

Q: So what accomplishment are you most proud of, and what is your mother most proud of?
A: The accomplishment I'm most proud of is my family. I've got a daughter and two little boys that are just incredible. I mean, that's an accomplishment. This is a career, but that's a true accomplishment. I’m also real proud of the fact that my mom has been able to watch me. I was in local television for a little while, so my mom wasn’t able to see what I do everyday. Now we can talk every day and she gets to see me. She’s got her new Sirius satellite system, so she’s going to be able to hear me. And you know what? Maybe she’ll call up too. That would be nice. But I’m really happy I’ve been able to share this with my entire family. My kids, my wife, my mom and of course my brother and father.

Q: Is there anything else you want to add?
A: The thing I want to add is that if you’re watching this on the Internet, we know you’re technically savvy. Go out and get a Sirius satellite radio so you can hear the whole show from beginning to end, and please call me. Please. Give us a call. (866) 378-CTTV. Got it? Call us!
