Court TV Host: Did Celeste Beard conspire with her lesbian lover Tracey Tarlton to kill Beard's husband, Steven? That's the question at the heart of Texas v. Beard, now on Court TV. In 1998, Steven Beard adopted Celeste's two daughters, Kristina and Jennifer, who became witnesses for the prosecution and testified against their own mother. We're goign to be talking to the Beard twins today.
Court TV Host: The Beard twins are here. Welcome Jennifer and Kristina Beard. Thanks for joining us today.
Jennifer Beard: Hello. Thank you for having us.
Kristina Beard: Welcome to Texas.
Court TV Host: We'll go straight to questions.
Question from katieb: Hi Kris and Jen, It's Katie B, from Austin and the Hawaii trip, just wanted to let you know that Rob and I still think about you, and wanted to know if you still live in Austin and what you are up to?
Kristina Beard: Aloha! Yes, we still live in Texas. Glad to know that you all are still thinking of us.
Jennifer Beard: Kristina and I think about the Hawaii trip all the time. We had a blast. Yes, we do live in Austin.
Question from Char: Hi - Is there a book out about your story?
Jennifer Beard: I've head that there are a few people who are trying to do book deals.
Question from maryland: Do you visit or communicate with your mother at all?
Jennifer Beard: Not at all.
Kristina Beard: I don't plan to.
Jennifer Beard: I do not plan to talk to her either.
Question from Lynwilson: Jennifer and Kristina, I want to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. You are very courageous. Did your father have any serious health issues before he was shot? or before he met Celeste
Jennifer Beard: I was aware that he had asthma.
Kristina Beard: I would just have to say that for the most part, he was a very healthy man. He had some complications with his asthma and his breathing, but for the most part he was pretty healthy.
Jennifer Beard: I just wanted to thank Lynwilson for her concern.
Question from shewolf: What did you think of Dick DeGuerin?
Kristina Beard: Frankly, I wasn't impressed.
Jennifer Beard: Ditto. I thought he had a loud bark, but no bite.
Kristina Beard: I think he might have had a short man's complex.
Question from Taurus: How many years was Celeste plying Steve Beard with everclear and sleeping pills?
Jennifer Beard: I found out much later than Kristina, but it was while I was in high school.
Kristina Beard: The sleeping pills and the everclear were things that occurred often.
Question from John: How did Tracey treat you, and when did you realize the type of relationship she was having with your mother?
Jennifer Beard: As far as Tracey treating us, she was very nice. I only suspected that Tracey and Celeste were together, but I never caught them in bed together.
Kristina Beard: Tracey was a down to earth person, who treated myself very nicely. She treated us as kind of a friend. And I had suspicions that they may have had a relationship early on. The way that Celeste and Tracey had mannerisms, the way they hung out together, confirmed my suspicions.
Question from saucey: Do you communicate with Tracey? What would you say to her if you could?
Jennifer Beard: As far as being pen pals, no. But I have met with her once, and I told her I forgave her and I really felt sorry for her.
Kristina Beard: I do not have any communications with Tracey, but I did get a chance to tell her how I felt about her. I have compassion for her, and I understand the manipulation that she went through with Celeste, but I still understand that she's the one pulled the trigger. And yes, it upsets me, but I can understand.
Question from Ellaina: You refer to Steven Beard as your dad. But refer to Celeste as "Celeste" Why?
Kristina Beard: Because Celeste is not a mom to us. We realize how she treated us our whole lives, and we've realized that it's been wrong, and that's not how a mother should treat her children. So she's not a mother to us.
Jennifer Beard: Just because she gave birth to us, does not entitle her to motherly respect.
Kristina Beard: We called him Dad because he deserved that title. He treated us as his own flesh and blood, and I treat him the same way.
Jennifer Beard: I agree with Kristina. He was a father figure.
Question from tippietime: Jennifer, what was your biological father like? You seemed to love him so much.
Question from kitkat: Were you close to your real father? Why were we he and your mother apart/divorced?
Jennifer Beard: I loved our biological father very much, and we were very close. He was a part of our everyday life. As far as our biological parents getting a divorce, I was too young to remember any of that. Our dad took us camping, and he was my softball coach and went to many of my basketball games. He was involved in my life very much.
Question from Mollie: Did this tragedy bring you and your sister closer or did you fight about it?
Kristina Beard: It's brought us closer.
Question from kitkat: Have you both lost your boyfriends (who were present at the time) as a result of this case and do you remain friends?
Jennifer Beard: Of course I love my ex-boyfriend, but we're not close anymore.
Kristina Beard: I currently am still dating the same boyfriend. I love him very much, and I'm glad that he was there to support me.
Question from Mollie: Do you think that if Celeste couldn't have found someone to kill Steve, she would have done it herself??
Jennifer Beard: I don't think she would have killed him herself, because it would have gotten back to her. She was trying to get away with it.
Kristina Beard: I can't answer that question for Celeste. She'd be the only one to answer that. Celeste is an odd person. Anything is up in the air with her.
Question from suzie: Was it hard for you ladies to testify against your mother?
Jennifer Beard: Yes. It was very difficult to see her sitting on the other side of the courtroom and to tell the truth.
Kristina Beard: Our father always told us that telling the truth was supposed to be easy, but during this whole experience, I have found it otherwise. It was difficult to sit across the room from a woman you know totally hates your guts, but I know in my heart I did the right thing. I know our Dad is looking down on us right now, and he's proud.
Question from michele: Did Steve have any indication that he was aware of some of Celeste's behavior? How did he handle her?
Kristina Beard: I don't believe he did. I know he was blinded by love.
Question from candy: What are your plans for the future?
Question from Lynwilson: Thank you so much for answering all these questions for us!! What are you doing with your lives now? Your chat with us has confirmed my belief that both of you are extraordinary women.
Jennifer Beard: Living day by day. I'm working and after the summer will go back to school. I feel like I haven't had a chance to breathe yet, so I'm not quite sure what my plans are.
Kristina Beard: I plan on going back to school this next fall, and I'm looking forward to doing that, and to having as little responsibility as possible at this point.
Question from Mollie: Did you and your sister always agree about your mother and her lifestyle?
Jennifer Beard: No. Kristina and I, after he was shot, in the beginning, Kristina and I thought very different things.
Kristina Beard: My whole childhood, I felt like the actions that Celeste took were right and correct because she was my mother. I felt like she knew what was best, you know, "mother knows best." And as far as Jen goes, she didn't feel that way.
Question from Bonita: Do you think you'll be able to ever forgive your mother sometime in the future?
Jennifer Beard: No.
Kristina Beard: That's a long ways away. But currently, no. I'm not sure that I can ever forgive her for what she has done. She betrayed the whole Beard family.
Question from yogi: What happen to Steve Beard's dog in the picture of him at the hospital?
Kristina Beard: I currently have Kaci. She's my little baby.
Court TV Host: You've both been very generous with your time Thank you for joining us for the chat. Do you have any closing thoughts?
Kristina Beard: I just want to tell everybody who supported my sister and I that we thank them, that we couldn't have gone as far as we did without their support. And I'd like to say thank you to everyone at the DA's office -- you took us under your wing.
Jennifer Beard: I would like to say that if the rest of the Beard family is watching that Kristina and I love them very much. And I would also like to thank supporters out there who I've never even met. One more thing: a very special thank you to the Victims' Services of the DA's office -- we love you. Throughout this whole experience, our hearts have been filled with love and not hate.
