CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Court TV) Rae Carruth may have thought about having his pregnant girlfriend attacked, but he didn't kill her, a female friend of the former professional football player told police.
Wendy Cole, the woman who drove to Tennessee with Carruth in her trunk, told investigators that the Carolina Panther was upset that Cherica Adams bragged about having his baby, the Charlotte Observer reported this weekend.
The Observer based its report on a 79-page transcript of an interview Cole gave police on Jan. 12. The paper also obtained a complete transcript of Adams' call to 911. Neither transcript has been released to the public and on Monday Carruth's defense attorney called for an investigation into the leak of the documents.
Adams was almost seven months pregnant when she was shot four times on Nov. 16, 1999, as she drove home from a date with Carruth. The baby survived, but Adams died a month later.
Upon learning of Adams' death on Dec. 14, Carruth fled in the trunk of Cole's Toyota Camry. The FBI tracked the two down a day later in a motel parking lot in Tennessee.
According to the paper's report, Cole offered police what she claimed was Carruth's version of the events that preceded the shooting. According to Cole, Carruth's co-defendant Van Brett Watkins offered to "handle" Adams for Carruth.
"From my understanding, when Rae left to go to the movies that at some point, he knew Watkins was going to handle Cherica," Cole said. She also said that following the shooting, Carruth said he couldn't believe that she didn't die after getting shot.
But Carruth, the father of a 6-year-old son in California, did consider staying with Adams for the sake of his unborn baby, Cole told police.
Whether Cole will testify is uncertain. She could refuse to take the stand since she is facing charges of harboring a fugitive.
While excerpts of the 911 call previously released by authorities revealed that Adams suspected Carruth in the shooting, the rest of the call implies that Carruth was at the scene when the shooting occurred.
The defense has claimed that while Carruth was driving in front of Adams' car, the shooting occurred after the two drove off in separate directions.
