During opening statements, lawyers for the defendants told the jury that since neither defendant set out to hurt anyone when their illegal drag race resulted in a fatal crash, their actions constitute manslaughter, not murder. If the jury accepts their argument, George Waller Jr. and Lawrence Calhoun could serve as little as three years in prison rather than the possible life terms they currently face.
