Wife promotes Web site to champion Jayson Williams' innocence
Tanya Young Williams, who is not affected by a gag order, proclaims her husband's innocence on a new Web site.

SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Jayson Williams' wife launched a Web site promoting her husband's innocence Wednesday morning, saying she wanted to thank supporters and correct "slanderous and inflammatory character assaults" against the pro hoopster turned manslaughter defendant.

Tanya Young Williams, who is a lawyer, announced the site during an appearance on "Good Morning America."

The site, myjaysonwilliams.com, includes fluffy features such as family photos and personal testimonials, along with hard-hitting criticism of prosecution witnesses in a section called "Let's Make A Deal."

There's also an anonymous letter attacking the motives for prosecutor Steven Lember's recent weight loss. "Did he do this because he thinks he's going to be a TV star, get a book deal, and go the way of Marcia Clark and Chris Darden?" the letter asks.

In a letter posted on the site, Williams' father, E.J., writes that his son was physically and emotionally abused as a child "at the hands of another."

"As a result, both he and our entire family are very, very sensitive about the mistreatment of others," E.J. Williams writes.

A gag order issued by Judge Edward Coleman prohibits trial participants, including lawyers, witnesses and the defendant, from commenting on the case. Tanya Williams, however, was not present at the Feb. 14, 2002, shooting of Costas "Gus" Christofi, and therefore is not on the witness list.

Coleman, apparently responding to the site and the morning show interview, asked jurors after lunch if they had been exposed to any media accounts of the case recently. The panelists said they had not.

Tanya Williams has been a constant presence in court, sitting in the first row of the gallery and holding her husband's hand as they exit court. She is pregnant with the couple's second child.
