Michael Skakel won't be allowed to attend father's funeral

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Convicted killer Michael Skakel will not be permitted to attend his father's funeral, state prison officials said Monday.

Rushton Skakel Sr., the brother of Ethel Kennedy, died Thursday at the age of 79 from a brain illness. A funeral Mass was scheduled for Friday in Greenwich.

Michael Skakel was convicted in June of the 1975 murder of his Greenwich neighbor Martha Moxley. He is serving 20 years to life in prison.

He is a maximum security inmate, and only minimum security inmates are allowed to apply for furloughs to attend family funerals, said Correction Department spokesman Brian Garnett.
