Widow Elizabeth Ratliff, pictured with daughter Margaret, was a friend of Michael Peterson and his first wife, Patricia Sue, while the two American families were neighbors living in Germany. Ratliff, however, died in 1985 after falling down a flight of stairs in her home. Her death was ruled an accident and Peterson became the guardian of Ratliff’s two daughters.
