Kansas man sentenced to death for killing two women, stuffing bodies into barrels

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A 59-year-old man was formally sentenced to death Tuesday for murdering two women and stuffing their bodies into barrels he kept on his rural Kansas property.

John E. Robinson Sr. was convicted last fall of killing Suzette Trouten, 27, of Michigan and Izabela Lewicka, 21, a former Purdue University student. Both were lured to Kansas by Robinson to engage in sadomasochistic sex.

Robinson was also convicted of first-degree murder for the 1985 death of Lisa Stasi, 19, whose body was never found. For killing Stasi, Judge John Anderson III sentenced Robinson to life in prison.

The bodies of Trouten and Lewicka were discovered in June 2000 on Robinson's property 60 miles south of Kansas City. Two days later, three more bodies were discovered in barrels in a storage locker rented by Robinson in Raymore, Mo.

Robinson is expected to stand trial for the Missouri deaths this year.

In a courtroom filled with members of Trouten's family, Christy Shipps, one of Robinson's daughters, asked the judge to spare her father's life for the sake of his grandchildren.

"They, your honor, have done nothing wrong," Shipps said.

The case began in March 2000, when Trouten's family notified police she was missing after coming to Kansas, purportedly to take a job caring for Robinson's father. The investigation continued, with officials linking Robinson to Stasi's disappearance.

He was arrested in June 2000 on charges of sexual battery filed by two women with whom Robinson had engaged in sex at Kansas City-area hotels.

The judge also sentenced Robinson to five to 20 years in prison for interference with parental custody, a charge related to the adoption he arranged of Stasi's daughter, and to 201/2 years for kidnapping Trouten.
