ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — Convicted sniper John Allen Muhammad was transferred here from Virginia on Monday to face six counts of murder in his second trial in the Washington area sniper shootings. A court commissioner denied Muhammad bail and he was then taken to a maximum security facility near Boyds, Md., where he will await a bond hearing in circuit court Tuesday. On Friday, a judge in Virginia had ordered Muhammad moved from Virginia's death row to Maryland. He has already been sentenced to death for a shooting in Manassas, Va. Muhammad, who had fought extradition, is to be tried in Maryland in the slayings of six people. In all, 10 people were killed and three others wounded in the shootings that terrorized the Washington area in October 2002.
A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Muhammad and Lee Malvo in June. Authorities plan to try them in all six deaths in a single trial. If convicted, Muhammad could get the death penalty, while Malvo, who was 17 at the time of the slayings, faces up to six consecutive life terms. Malvo was extradited to Maryland last month. |
