Tenn. v. D'Antonio: 'Music Row' murder

The Verdict

The eight men and four women of the jury took nearly eight hours to find Richard D'Antonio guilty of the first-degree murder of Kevin Hughes.

As for the charges relating to Sammy Sadler's shooting, the panel convicted the defendant of assault with intent to commit murder in the second-degree. Though they could have found him guilty of the latter charge in the first-degree, their verdict shows that they apparently believed Hughes was the intended target and Sadler got caught in the crossfire. Had the jury believed both Hughes and Sadler were both intentional targets, the law would require a conviction in the first-degree.

Immediately following the verdict, Judge J. Randall Wyatt, Jr. sentenced Richard D'Antonio to the mandatory punishment of life in prison.

Wyatt later dismissed the second-degree assault with intent to commit murder conviction, because the statute of limitations is only two years.

Technically, D'Antonio's life sentence does include the possibility of parole.   The earliest date D'Antonio would be eligible for parole is September 3, 2038. He would be 92 years old.
