Judge warns against juror harassment

Someone is trying to get personal information about jurors in the Westerfield case, an angry Judge William Mudd announced Thursday after several private meetings with panelists.

The judge said Wednesday that a man whose identity court officers have not yet determined "followed two of the jurors in this case to where they park their cars and wrote down their license numbers."

Mudd called the incident a "serious breach" in the security of the trial. The jury is anonymous, with panelists referred to only by their numbers during public proceedings.

The case has captivated the San Diego area. It is broadcast live on local television and radio, and Mudd speculated that the man might work for one of the media outlets.

Speaking to reporters in the media section of the court after jurors had been escorted from the room, Mudd warned against any further incidents and said he would ban live coverage of the trial if any occurred.
