Norwegian thief busted after breaking into apartment full of cameras for reality TV show

OSLO, Norway (AP) — A Norwegian burglar stepped into the limelight when he broke into an Oslo apartment, grabbing cash and perfume.

The apartment, outfitted with 17 small video cameras, is taped round the clock for a reality television program.

"He was pretty embarrassed and unhappy when he realized that he had been exposed," program editor Vebjoern Ytreberg said Wednesday.

As part of a popular show, called "Baren" or "The Bar," 10 participants are videotaped around the clock as they run a bar in downtown Oslo or move about in the apartment they share upstairs.

Highlights are replayed on cable each weeknight. The action is broadcast live, 24 hours a day on the Internet.

Only one resident — who was asleep — was home at the time of the burglary.

When the stranger was spotted stealing on a monitor, staff members rushed to ambush the 44-year-old thief, whose name was not released.

He denied the theft, until the cameras were pointed out and police arrived. The show has not decided whether to press charges.

"Some of the participants said they almost felt sorry for him because he was so unlucky or stupid," Ytreberg said. "This reminds me of something that could have been from the television show 'America's Dumbest Criminals."'
