WOODSTOCK, Va. (AP) A two-year undercover investigation of the Warlocks motorcycle gang led to the execution of more than 80 arrest and search warrants in six states along the East Coast, authorities said.
Over the past two days, about 300 federal and local officers carried out raids in Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, New York, South Carolina and Maryland, U.S. Attorney John L. Brownlee of Roanoke, Va., said Thursday.
Many of those arrested on drug and gun charges are members of the Warlocks organization.
The investigation originated in Shenandoah County, Va., in the northwest corner of the state, when the sheriff's office determined that a large amount of methamphetamine was distributed by a local biker gang. Two special agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives infiltrated the Warlocks organization as part of the investigation.
"If you're involved in organized illegal activity, if you're committing federal firearm or explosives violations, you cannot hide within an organization," said Jeffrey R. Roehm, ATF special agent in charge.
Brownlee said 28 people were indicted in Virginia as a result of the investigation.
About a half-dozen people, including the president of the Warlock chapter in Hernando County, Fla., were arrested as a result of searches in Florida, according to ATF Special Agent Carlos Baixauli.
