Interactive Timeline

From the first Hey, sweetheart to the final Good-bye, Scott, jurors in Scott Peterson’s capital trial screened 42 phone conversations and voice mail messages between the fertilizer salesman and his mistress, Amber Frey from Dec. 16, 2002 to Feb. 19, 2003. The nearly 10 hours of recordings provide a fascinating record of their relationship after Peterson’s pregnant wife, Laci, vanished. The tapes include angry accusations by Frey, tearful declarations of devotion from Peterson and casual chitchat about movies, work schedules and bills. But the recordings do not contain any direct evidence about the murders of Laci and the son she was carrying. So how will the prosecution and the defense use the tapes to advance their cases?Laci and Scott Peterson
Prosecution
HE WAS A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR.
Presented himself as a Sacramento bachelor who had never been in a serious relationship.
Invented phony European business trips, complete with detailed descriptions of landmarks, hotels and flights,
to explain long absences.
“I’m uh ... near the Eiffel Tower and the New Year’s celebration is unreal.”
HE PROMISED FREY AND HER DAUGHTER A FUTURE.
“I desire so much to be, you know, for the rest of our lives, your best friend,
your biggest comfort …”
HE REMAINED OBSESSIVELY DEVOTED TO HER LONG AFTER HIS WIFE WENT MISSING.
Talked to her for hours while volunteers searched for his wife and even before a candlelight
vigil.
“You have a missing pregnant wife and you're talking to your girlfriend? Hum! Hum! Did you think about that one?”
Tried to give her money for rent and her cellphone bill.
“I don’t know how it is financially for you and do you need help with, you know, paying for the office or rent or anything like that?”
Begged her to meet him for a secret rendezvous at a lakeside cabin.
“We could go there alone. It’s easy to get away. We just need to see each other, Amber, for a couple of hours.”
Bought her and her daughter birthday gifts and offered to send her to a resort.
“If there's some resort you want to go to ... Ill just, you know, get you the funds ...”
HE SAID HE DID NOT WANT ANY CHILDREN OF HIS OWN.
  Talked about getting a vasectomy.
Frey: “Do you still feel that you’re very adamant about not having another child?”
Peterson: “Oh, I wouldn’t say adamant, but it’s not in my thoughts currently.”
HE HINTED AT PROBLEMS IN HIS MARRIAGE.
Suggested Laci’s baby might not be his.
Refused to say whether his was a loveless marriage or whether they had shared a bed the night before
Laci disappeared.
Said he had secrets he could only tell her in person.
Defense
HE REPEATEDLY SAID HE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS WIFE’S DISAPPEARANCE.
HE SAID HE LOVED HIS WIFE.
“I love Laci. I loved Laci. No doubt.”
HE SAID HIS FIRST PRIORITY WAS FINDING HIS WIFE.
“I care very much about finding Laci.”
HE NEVER SAID HE LOVED FREY.
“I guess the one that bothered me most was when they asked if you are in love with me and you said no.”
HE NEVER DISCOURAGED HER FROM GOING TO THE POLICE.
