NEW YORK (Court TV) — Prosecutors and attorneys representing Luigi Mangione have requested a hearing this Friday in federal court, but haven’t said what the hearing is about.

Mangione, 28, faces charges in both federal and New York state court alleging he shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a hotel in Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2024. In New York state, Mangione is charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. In federal court, he’s charged with stalking.
Federal prosecutors had initially charged Mangione with murder and sought the death penalty, but U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett dismissed the charge, saying it was technically flawed. That leaves Mangione facing only a charge of stalking, which carries a potential sentence of life in prison if he’s convicted.
A letter submitted Wednesday to Garnett says the parties “write jointly to request a conference with the Court.” The parties offered no further detail about the substance of the hearing, which is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 14. Sources familiar with the case told ABC News that the parties are expected to discuss a plea deal at the conference.
In his state-level case, Mangione has pleaded not guilty and successfully fought to keep some key evidence out of his upcoming trial, including a loaded magazine, a cellphone, a passport, a wallet and a computer chip found inside his backpack when he was initially detained. Other items, including a red notebook appearing to contain plans for Thompson’s killing and a gun, will be admissible at his trial.
Surveillance cameras captured Thompson’s shooting as a masked gunman shot the 50-year-old from behind. The ammunition had the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose” written on it, mimicking a phrase used to describe how insurance companies avoid paying claims. Authorities arrested Mangione at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania days later, following a nationwide manhunt.
