Caleb Flynn, 40, was convicted on Tuesday of multiple charges, including aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence in his wife Ashley Flynn’s death. On Thursday, he returned to court because the law requires notifying him that his convictions qualify him for the violent offender list; that means he would have to register as a violent offender if he’s ever released from prison.
Despite the hearing’s administrative nature, Flynn sat with tears streaming down his face. The defendant largely sat silent, acknowledging only his name and that he understood the requirements under the law as explained to him. “No ma’am,” he responded when asked if he had any questions.
Prosecutors told the jury that Flynn killed the victim in the couple’s home on Feb. 16, 2026, and then tried to stage the scene to look like a burglary. Flynn told first responders that an intruder had come in and killed his wife, but there was no physical evidence found to support his story.
Text messages and digital data revealed that Flynn had been carrying on an affair with the worship leader at their family’s church for more than a year before his wife’s death. In those messages, Flynn repeatedly said he hated his wife and wished her dead.
Throughout the trial, Flynn was often seen crying in court and dabbing his eyes with a tissue. After the verdict, he put his head on the counsel table in front of him as he rocked back and forth and sobbed.
Flynn called himself “kind of a crybaby” when he sat down for an interview during his short appearance on season 12 of “American Idol.” In the same interview, when asked what was most important to him, he said, “I love the Lord. I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty. I love her.”
Judge Jeannine Pratt scheduled Flynn’s sentencing for Monday.
