TROY, Ohio (Court TV) — A former “American Idol” contestant sobbed in court and declared his innocence before he was sentenced to life in prison.

“The layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty that you have shown are, quite honestly, impossible to fathom,” said Judge Jeannine Pratt as she sentenced Caleb Flynn to life without the possibility of parole. “And the court finds that deeply disturbing.”
Flynn, 40, was sentenced after a jury found him guilty of murder, aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. The victim was found shot twice in the head in the couple’s bed on Feb. 16, 2026. The defendant called 911 to report that an intruder had broken into their home and killed his wife before fleeing, but investigators found no evidence to support his story.
Prosecutors told the jury that Flynn killed his wife because he loved Alleigha Botner, a worship leader at his church with whom he had carried on an affair for more than a year. Botner testified at Flynn’s trial and read from the more than 107,000 text messages the couple exchanged, many of which discussed a mutual hatred for the victim.
“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed those vows,” Flynn said as he addressed the court on Monday. “I loved her and I love her. She is, was, my wife. She was beautiful and amazing in countless ways. Lastly, I have, unfortunately, lied about a lot of things over the last couple of years, but as I stand here, before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife. I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to. I did not kill my wife.”
Flynn sat sobbing as his former brother-in-law and mother-in-law, who along with Ashley Flynn’s sister are now caring for the Flynns’ two children, read victim impact statements written by the children. “Dear Daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing?” one letter began.
Mommy was the perfect person, the absolute perfect person. What did she ever do to make you hate her so much? She loved you. And she cared for you. She took care of you. She loved you with all her heart. … How could you cheat on her and go to that awful girl named Alleigha? I never liked her. She was just a girl who put on a microphone to her mouth and spoke words with the tune.
The couple’s other daughter said in her statement to her father, “It’s sad that you can’t love anyone but yourself,” and warned the defendant, “I don’t plan on coming to see you.”
Flynn cried through much of the sentencing hearing, as he had for his trial and at an administrative hearing after his conviction. Years before his arrest, when he appeared on Season 12 of the reality competition series “American Idol,” Flynn described himself as “kind of a crybaby.”
