Video from Queen City News showed a man in the courtroom gallery rushing toward defendant Tyler Minor, 19, at Tuesday’s sentencing hearing. The man tried to push through several deputies before they forced him back and took him into custody.

The outburst came as Minor accepted a plea agreement with prosecutors to resolve a case involving the death of Alvin Steele. Minor pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, possession of a weapon by a prisoner and assault. He had initially faced charges of first-degree murder for Steele’s death.

In an affidavit reviewed by Court TV, detectives said that Steele was shot at a motel on May 12, 2025. Steele’s girlfriend told police that Minor had been staying with the victim at the time. First responders found Steele lying on the ground, covered by a sheet and a pillow.

While detectives were at the motel with the victim, Minor called the police himself to report that he had shot his friend “and that his friend was ‘gone,'” police said in an affidavit. Minor’s father then called the police to say that he was bringing his son to the department; the two never made it in because Minor fled from the car while they were en route. Minor was arrested days later.

Minor was sentenced to 51 to 74 months in prison under the plea agreement, according to court records.

The man deputies restrained in court on Tuesday was a member of Steele’s family, Queen City News reported. In a statement to the outlet, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said that the man was handcuffed and charged with disorderly conduct in a government building.

Court TV reached out to deputies but received no response.
