TROY, Ohio (Court TV) — A former contestant on “American Idol” once again sat crying in court as his slain wife’s family took the stand, laying out what prosecutors say was a financial motive for the victim’s death.
Caleb Flynn, 40, is facing several charges, including aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault, in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, who was shot to death in the couple’s bed. While Caleb Flynn told investigators that his wife was killed by an unknown intruder who broke into the family’s Tipp City, Ohio, home, prosecutors say that the defendant shot the victim execution-style while she slept.

Prosecutors have said there were two motives in the case: The first was Caleb Flynn’s alleged yearslong affair; the second was financial.
The alleged financial motive came into focus on Tuesday, when prosecutors called Ashley Flynn’s family to testify. At the time of his wife’s death, Caleb Flynn worked for her family’s business as a salesman. Ashley Flynn’s sister, Kayla Keyt, said her father was ready to pass the business on to his daughters, who would split it 50-50. Keyt said she serves as the business’s accountant and bookkeeper, and after her father announced his plans to share the company, she put together a presentation to show her husband and Caleb Flynn exactly what they were getting. The presentation, a spreadsheet of projections based on years of tax returns, showed that if sales continued to increase, each family could make between $300,000 and $400,000.
After the shooting on Feb. 16, 2026, Caleb Flynn told the same story to Ashley Flynn’s family that he had told investigators: He had been sleeping on the couch, then in his daughter’s room, before hearing a loud noise from the master bedroom. When he went to see what happened, he found his wife had been shot.
At first, Ashley Flynn’s mother and sister didn’t question the story, but something did stick with them. “Going to sleep in with the girls, that seemed odd to me, because I never heard of him doing that before,” Keyt said. “But the second part was, how did he not, I just remember being like, ‘How did you not see the intruder running out of Ashley’s room?'”
“It just didn’t make sense. None of that makes sense to me. Then I even Googled, I said, ‘Can a Christian man snap and shoot his wife and kill his wife?’ I did a Google on that,” Todd Smith, Ashley Flynn’s father, testified. “I said, ‘Nothing makes sense. This really doesn’t look good on Caleb,’ and [my wife] said, ‘Don’t even go there.'”

Keyt testified that she has taken custody of the two children Caleb and Ashley Flynn shared. Caleb Flynn’s defense pressed her about what the children, now ages 10 and 12, have been told about their father’s culpability. Keyt said she told the children that police believe the evidence shows their father killed their mother.
Keyt also revealed that the children were told about their father’s affair with a woman whom she identified as the main worship leader at their church, where the defendant also worked as a music pastor. “They were shocked,” Keyt said. “They were upset for mommy, because they said she loved daddy more than anyone else in life, so why did daddy not love her as much? But then when we told them who it was, the oldest said, ‘I’m not surprised.'”
Throughout the testimony, Caleb Flynn wept quietly, dabbing his face with tissues. He also cried on Monday, when prosecutors showed the jury photos of Ashley Flynn’s injuries. The display of emotion is characteristic of the defendant, who said in an interview during his appearance on Season 12 of “American Idol,” “I’m kind of a crybaby; I get it from my mom and my dad.” Caleb Flynn was eliminated after the first round in Hollywood.
