PONTIAC, Mich. (Court TV) — A Michigan judge sentenced a mother and her boyfriend, who were convicted of beating a 6-year-old child to death, to life in prison.

Daniel Giacchina and Elaina Jennings were convicted at separate trials on charges of murder, child abuse and lying to police in the death of Jennings’ 6-year-old son, Giovanni “Chulo” Jennings.
Giovanni was rushed to the hospital on July 30, 2024, after Jennings called 911 to report that he was not breathing. The child died at the hospital later that day. A medical examiner determined his death was homicide, caused by blunt force trauma and a perforated bowel.
At a news conference announcing charges against the couple, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said that the investigation included going through the defendants’ phones and speaking to Jennings’ other young children in the home. “What we found can only be described as horrific,” McDonald said.
Doctors at the hospital immediately noticed that Giovanni’s body was covered in injuries. Photos taken during the autopsy showed bruising and lacerations to his entire body, including, McDonald said, “his scalp, temples, lips, inner mouth, cheeks, forehead, chin, shoulder, forearms, fingers, thumbs, back, buttocks, inner thighs, knees and shins.” Among the injuries, she said, was a BB gun wound to the child’s shin.
When police first spoke to Jennings, she told them that her son had been with his biological father that day, but investigators quickly determined that wasn’t true. McDonald said that Jennings and Giacchina had conspired to blame the victim’s father.
At his mother’s house, Giovanni was abused regularly, McDonald said. When Jennings went to work, she would leave her children in her boyfriend’s care. “Although the abuse sometimes happened while Jennings was at work, Jennings was aware of it and approved of the physical assaults,” McDonald said, noting that sometimes Jennings “encouraged Giacchina to abuse” the child.
Prosecutors said that Giovanni was forced to stay in a “pen” in the corner of the bedroom where Jennings and Giacchina slept. Instead of a bed, Giovanni slept on a wooden pallet; there were black curtains and barricades in place so he couldn’t see out or escape.
In one incident, less than two weeks before Giovanni’s death, McDonald said that Giacchina stapled the victim face-first to the wall to keep him further confined; Giacchina sent a photo showing the child bound to the wall to Jennings. “That photo shows the shoulders of Chulo’s shirt stapled to the corner in such a manner that Chulo’s body, along with his head and face, were wedged into the corner of the wall,” McDonald said. “Both Jennings and Giacchina laughed about the photo and Giacchina’s use of the staple gun to solve ‘the problem.'” On that date, McDonald said, Giovanni was being punished for looking out the window.
On Wednesday, Judge Michael Warren sentenced both Jennings and Giacchina to prison for the rest of their lives without the possibility of parole. He also ordered Giacchina to serve an additional two years for firearms charges — he was a convicted felon and not legally allowed to possess weapons found inside the home, according to records reviewed by Court TV.
“Giovanni Jennings deserved love and protection from the adults in his life,” McDonald said in a statement after juries had found both defendants guilty. “While we cannot bring him back, these verdicts hold Daniel Giacchina and Elaina Jennings accountable for the horrific abuse of an innocent 6-year-old boy who should still be with us.”
