Chad Daybell called funeral home using fake name day after Charles Vallow’s death

Chad Daybell called a mortuary posing as the nephew of Lori Vallow Daybell's fourth husband, Charles Vallow. He wanted a price quote for cremation and shipping from Arizona to Louisiana, which is where Charles' sister Kay Woodcock lived. Chad used a (semi) fake name, spalling his last name as D-A-Y-B-A-L.

BOISE, Idaho (Court TV) — On Day 4 of Lori Vallow Daybell‘s murder trial, the jury listened to a new recorded phone call Chad Daybell made to a  funeral home the same day her fourth husband Charles Vallow was shot and killed by Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, in what he said was self-defense.

In the phone call, Chad used the fake name, “Dabal” (more like an altered version of his real name) and inquired about cremating and shipping a body from Arizona to Louisiana, where Charles Vallow’s sister, Kay Woodcock lives.

Here’s the phone conversation Chad had with a representative from the Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery:

Chad Daybell: “We just had a death in the family, and we really don’t want anything but a cremation, and then to send the cremains to the family in Louisiana. Just a simple, no, nothing other than a cremation and sending him to his family for a service in Louisiana. Is there any way to know a ballpark price on that?”

Funeral Home: “Yes, and I’m sorry for your loss.”

Chad Daybell: “Oh, thank you.”

Funeral Home: “Let me transfer you over to the director who can assist you with the pricing. What is your name please?”

Chad Daybell: “It is Chad Dabal. D-A-B-A-L. Dabal.”

Funeral Home: “How are you related to the person who passed?”

Chad Daybell: “I’m his nephew.”

Funeral Home: “And then also, this is for the Valley of the Sons in Chandler, correct?”

Chad Daybell: “Yes.”

Funeral Home: “Thank you.”

She and her husband, Chad Daybell, are charged with multiple counts of conspiracy, murder and grand theft in connection with the deaths of Vallow Daybell’s two children: Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Both are also charged in connection with the death of Chad Daybell’s previous wife, Tammy Daybell. (Lisa C. Cheney)

Chad Daybell: “Yes he was there in Chandler, I was in Iowa so I’m just trying to help out.”

Funeral Home: “Oh, okay, thank you. Um, what is your uncle’s name, for reference please?”

Chad Daybell: “He is John Dabal.”

Funeral Home: “And last name?”

Chad Daybell: “Well, D-A-B-A-L. The same. John, uh-huh.”

Funeral Home: “Did he have a middle name?”

(PAUSE)

Chad Daybell: “Myron”

Funeral Home: “M-Y-R-O-N?”

Chad Daybell: “Yeah.”

(THERE IS SOME BACK AND FORTH AS HE STRUGGLES TO PROVIDE A PHONE NUMBER)

Funeral Home: “Was he in a nursing home, hospital or residence?”

Chad Daybell: “Ummm passes away in a hospital, I don’t know the details… ”

(THERE’S SOME MORE BACK AND FORTH AS HE’S TRANSFERED TO THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR, WHO GETS ON THE LINE AS CHAD EXPLAINS HIS SITUATION AGAIN)

Funeral Director: “I’m sorry to hear that.”

(PAUSE)

Chad Daybell: “It’s, yeah, sad to see him go. Now I think he’s going to the medical examiner, I don’t know all the details, but what the family basically wants is just to have him cremated there in Chandler and then shipped, have his cremains shipped to New Orleans and we’ll deal with the service later. So I’m just trying to get a ballpark price.”

The conversation quickly wraps up after the funeral director quotes roughly $2,000 for things like transportation of the body, the price of cremation and other fees. Chad says he’s going to call a few other funeral homes and get back to her.

The couple faces several charges, including multiple counts of first-degree murder, related to the deaths of Chad’s first wife, Tammy Daybell and two of Lori’s children, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, whose bodies were discovered on Chad’s property in June 2020.

An Idaho judge recently severed the couple’s case, and while Lori’s is underway currently in Ada County, Chad’s trial was vacated and will go on a future date.
