TROY, Ohio (Court TV) — A pastor who once appeared as a contestant on “American Idol” broke down in tears as photos of the scene where his wife was found dead were shown in court.
Caleb Flynn, 40, sat at the defense table on the second day of his trial as David Hammond of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation testified about the scene at the Flynns’ home on the night of Feb. 16. Caleb Flynn called 911 that night to report that a burglary had taken place at the home and his wife, 37-year-old Ashley Flynn, was shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors said during their opening statements on Friday that Caleb Flynn allegedly texted another woman, his reported mistress, more than 100,000 times before telling her the night before Ashley Flynn’s death, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow, February 16, a day I’ll never forget.”
Prosecutors told the court that Ashley Flynn was “executed.” “She was shot in the middle of the night — twice, in the back of her head — lying in bed in a sleeping position,” they said.
On Monday, Hammond described photos of the bloody crime scene to the court. As the photos began to show Ashley Flynn’s body, Caleb Flynn became visibly emotional and cried. Hammond told prosecutors that while at the scene, he could not tell how many shots hit Ashley Flynn due to the amount of blood and brain matter that was on the bed surrounding her head.
Two fired 9 mm cartridge casings were found on the floor of the bedroom.
Caleb Flynn was shown apparently weeping again after Hammond testified that police determined that Ashley Flynn was shot while she was asleep. Hammond told prosecutors, “[F]rom how we examined her and her overall positioning, it appeared to us, it was visually consistent that she was asleep or lying still in that position when she was harmed.”
Caleb Flynn is charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and intimidation of a witness, attorney or victim in a criminal case. He has pleaded not guilty.
