ATLANTA (Court TV) — A person of interest has reportedly been charged for the kidnapping and murder of an Atlanta bartender.

DeMarcus Brinkely is accused of kidnapping 27-year-old Mariam Abdulrab in front of her home around 5:00 a.m. on Friday, August 13. A neighbor called police upon witnessing a male suspect forcing a female into his car and driving away, according to a press conference.

About an hour later, police responded to a scene about a mile and a half away on reports of shots fired. They found nothing while canvasing the area, according to authorities.

Four hours later, police responded to a call of a woman’s body found nearby. They determined the victim, who had been fatally shot, was Abdulrab. Authorities said the shots fired call was likely connected to the incident.

Brinkley was taken into custody following a police chase that ended in a crash. He is recovering at an Atlanta hospital, where he was initially held on traffic charges. He was charged with Abdulrab’s murder on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

Police have not stated if Abdulrab and Brinkely knew each other. The case is an ongoing investigation.
