NEW YORK (AP) Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's girlfriend Judith
Nathan asked a judge to intervene to get professional supervision
for her teen-age daughter after the girl was attacked by a dog that
mangled her face.
It's the latest chapter of Giuliani's bitter divorce and the
concurrent custody dispute his friend Nathan is fighting with her
ex-husband.
The 16-year-old girl has been living with her father, Bruce Nathan, since December although Judith Nathan officially has custody.
The attack happened Wednesday at a friend's home that the girl was not supposed to be visiting.
Nathan, a former nurse, said her daughter's jaw was mangled so
badly that she could see a muscle protruding from the wound. The
girl later had about 10 hours of plastic surgery, Nathan said.
"I'm asking for professional supervision because clearly her
father can't control her," Judith Nathan told the judge Thursday.
"We need some help, some intervention."
The girl is already fighting "anorexia and all of the things a
16-year-old battles in New York City," Nathan said. "I've been
taking her to a psychiatrist for anorexia for two years.
"I'm asking that she is supervised," Nathan said. "I'm asking
for her sake. She needs help."
Bruce Nathan has alleged in court papers that his ex-wife was
spending most of her time with Giuliani and her concern for their
daughter had become secondary. Moreover, he said, his daughter
preferred to live with him and does not get along with Giuliani.
Bruce Nathan's lawyer, Sandra Katz, rejected the suggestion that
he had failed to control the girl. She said he had told their
daughter "not to associate with these people. You can't watch a
16-year-old 24 hours a day."
State Supreme Court Justice Richard Braun said he wasn't sure
what Judith Nathan wanted.
"You can't lock a kid up every second of the day," the judge
said. However, the judge added, "This is a terribly unfortunate
incident."
Police said they had not been summoned about the dog attack
Wednesday.
