SALT LAKE CITY (AP) A man sought for questioning in the apparent abduction of a 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart may have been spotted in Texas early Friday, authorities there said.
Police in the Texas panhandle town of Hereford say they received a call Friday morning about an abandoned vehicle that may be linked to Bret Michael Edmunds, The Hereford Brand reported.
Edmunds, 26, is being sought by Salt Lake City authorities who want to question him, but they say he is not considered a suspect in the girl's June 5 disappearance.
Shortly after midnight a man parked a vehicle in front of a house in Hereford and told bystanders they could have it if they wanted it, police said. Residents called police when the man had not returned for the car a couple of hours later. Officers determined the car had been reported stolen from Colorado.
Later, a convenience store clerk there called police and reported a man had tried to purchase a bottle of water with a credit card. When the credit card could not be used, the man left the store without paying for the water.
Police Chief David Wagner said the clerk positively identified the customer as Edmunds.
A second car was stolen in Hereford and found in Curry County, N.M., on the Texas border Friday morning, police said.
Edmunds had been sought for questioning because a milkman had seen a car in the Smart family's neighborhood June 3, two days before Elizabeth's disappearance. He provided authorities with a partial license plate number that was traced to Edmunds.
Edmunds was also being sought on outstanding warrants on charges of fraud and assault on a police officer.
Thursday the license plates police said were on Edmunds' car were found at a park in Centerville, a suburb north of Salt Lake City.
