Man who performed home castration gets up to 4 years in prison

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A man was sentenced Monday to up to four years in prison for performing a castration in his kitchen last year.

Suo-Shan Wang, 29, was arrested in June after a man began hemorrhaging outside his home following a voluntary castration. Authorities say after the procedure, the men shared a slice of pie at the same table on which the castration was performed.

Wang was convicted on April 4 of practicing medicine without a license, a felony. He was given a sentence of 14 months to four years.

In handing down the sentence, Circuit Court Judge Fred Mester stressed that such acts "will not be tolerated in this society."

Wang told the court Monday that he was trying to help people who were unable to get similar services elsewhere, but that he regretted his actions.

The man who underwent the castration did so because he wanted to curb his sex drive because he had a sexually transmitted disease, prosecutors have said.

Wang's attorney argued that the defendant never claimed to be a doctor and did not charge for the surgery.
