Albert to return to sportscasting at the Madison Square Garden network
July 15 (Court TV) -- Nearly a year after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery in a sex scandal that led to his resignation from the Madison Square Garden Network and his firing from NBC, Marv Albert will to return to his sportscasting job at MSG.
At a press conference held in Madison Square Garden, it was announced that Albert will be anchor of "MSG Sports Desk" and do limited radio play-by-play-duties for New York Knicks games.
"This is a day where I can turn the page on what has been a very difficult time in my life," Albert said. "I want to make somehing clear: what I did was wrong."
"He has been very, very loyal to the company," said Dave Checketts, the preseident of Madison Square Garden. "Today, we return the favor."
Albert pled guilty on Sept. 25, 1997 in the middle of his trial to the assault charges filed against him by Vanessa Perhach, a woman with whom he had had a 10-year sexual relationship. He received a 12-month suspended sentence in which he was ordered to undergo counseling. Under the sentence, the plea to the assault and battery charges would be expunged from Albert's record if he did not commit any crimes over the next year
Albert was the voice of New York Knicks and Rangers games for more than three decades, most of which were under MSG. He was also the lead announcer for basketball games at NBC.
