SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man stole a car that had been left running with a baby inside it, picked up a friend and abandoned the child on a porch about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away, police said.

The driver, Angel Marie Jasso, 34, and the friend, Roddy Mike Montes, 20, were arrested on suspicion of child kidnapping, and the baby was not hurt after it was left on the porch in Plain City, the Deseret News reported, citing a police affidavit.

The car was stolen after the baby’s mother and another person parked the car and went inside a home to talk with someone they knew, police said.

Jasso drove to Montes’ house and told him that “she had stolen a car and there was a child in it,” the affidavit said.

The two drove on and eventually dropped off the infant on a front porch, still strapped to her car seat, the affidavit said. An Amber Alert was issued for the missing child, and two women found the infant later that day.

Jasso and Montes were arrested following a police chase.

Montes “kicked out a window of a police vehicle, shattering it” after he was detained, according to the affidavit.

Jasso “admitted to knowing she should have called police to return the child,” the affidavit said.

Both were booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of child kidnapping and failing to stop at the command of a law enforcer.

Jasso was arrested on suspicion of stealing a car and running from police. Montes was arrested on suspicion of damaging a police car and being in a stolen vehicle.

No attorneys were listed for the two suspects in court records as of Thursday.
