But when Donnie Lee Amis, 50, of Washington, D.C., and Cassandra Albritton, 44, of Mitchelville, Md., fell asleep in a tan 2000 Honda Accord parked on a main Maryland highway, they not only ended up arrested, but caused gridlock for thousands of rush-hour commuters.
A highway worker reported spotting the vehicle with two occupants who appeared to be catching some shut-eye around 8 a.m. on Sept. 7.
When state police checked the license plate number, they discovered the car had been stolen only a few miles away in Bladensburg, Md.
Troopers are unsure whether the two were really in dreamland or were just pretending to be asleep, but the duo ignored numerous orders to step out of the vehicle, which authorities believe was out of gas.
"Based on the peculiar actions of the individuals and their refusal to engage in any form of dialogue, troopers could not determine the level of danger they posed to the public," said a press release issued by state police.
Consequently, police entered a standoff with the pair and were forced to shut down the highway, causing delays of up to three hours for commuters.
The standoff lasted about an hour before police apprehended the couple. They were then charged with auto theft and drug possession after cops also found marijuana, a white powder believed to be either heroin or cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
