"We jokingly called them panty goggles," said Prairie Village Police Captain Wes Jordan. "It was a cheap disguise, but it worked."
Surveillance video shows a brief-clad thief busting through the door, ransacking the cash register and grabbing the fudge.
Police say Bryan Schoonover, 32, broke into Laura's Little Candies in Prairie Village, Kansas, through a side door on July 21, 2006.
"There were footprints all over the door," said candy shop manager Fred Prez. "He kicked the door in and then pushed the refrigerator blocking it."
Looking through one of the underwear's leg holes, with the other on top of his head, Schoonover made his way to the register and took $160 from the drawer.
On his way out, Schoonover allegedly stopped by the fudge counter and took two slabs of chocolate pecan fudge worth approximately $70.
Because the burglary was so brief, Prez thinks the fudge thief was probably familiar with the shop, and maybe even the candy.
"I assume he was a customer because he knew the store layout," Prez said. "Maybe he bought some candy before and liked the fudge."
Prairie Village police arrested Schoonover on July 29, 2006, more than a week after the burglary, after they accompanied police from a neighboring jurisdiction to the home of Schoonover's girlfriend to discuss another criminal matter with him.
There, Jordan said, Prairie Village police found "multiple items of evidence" related to the burglary. Jordan wouldn't disclose the recovered evidence, but referred to them as "fruits of the crime."
"As they started to ask questions, we started to ask questions, too," said Jordan. "So we were able to put the icing on our investigation."
Schoonover was arrested and charged with burglary and theft. According to Jordan, Schoonover had just been released from prison in May for burglary.
But although Schoonover may be a "seasoned criminal," as Jordan described him, police believe this was his first time using briefs as a disguise.
"I think they were a juvenile pair of underwear," said Jordan, "because they were a good fit."
